Camps/Kemps in Cleburne County, Central Alabama
My first foray into Alabama cemeteries was sparked by reading how Camps from our line had moved from the Carolinas in the mid-1800s and settled in Cleburne County. I wondered if I could find records and evidence in the burial grounds. As in Huntsville, where our own line settled for two decades and then moved lock, stock, and barrel to West TN, I found very little at the county courthouse or library. At the Lucille Morgan Library I did uncover information about Old Lebanon Church where the Kemp family played some significant role.

The Lebanon Churchyard yielded some evidence of the church-going nature of early Camps in the area. A prominent stone in the middle of the cemetery reads ELIZA KEMP wife of G.W. KEMP, June 16 1852 - Jan 5 1910. But that was the only physical evidence I found in Cleburne County during my limited stay.

My uncle, Barney E. Kemp overlooks his family plot where he has buried two wives shortly after his second wife, Ethel, was buried. and then a few months later. Included are the mother of his four children, JEDDIE LEE PILCHER KEMP (1922 - 1964) and ETHEL WEST KEMP (Jan 4 1923 - Mar 21 2001).
Some other Kemps buried in the cemetery but not known to the family are Marion Joseph 'Joe' Kemp and Margaret Aust Kemp. Also their son, Marion Joseph 'Butch' Kemp (July 14 1952 - Oct 4 1974). Some Camps, perhaps also related but further removed are Robert L. Camp (Jul 1 1913 - Jul 16 1998) and Mary E. Camp (still living at that time).

In the big cemetery in Huntsville, I also found only one Camp family and judging from the size of the stone, a prominent one. Here in 2001, the author stands next to the monument to the memory of JAMES W. CAMP, Born Greenville, VA, June 28 1789 and Died Madison County, Oct 9 1845. His wife, MARY ANN, Born Nov 1 1796 and Died Nov 22 1828. I wondered how he might have been related to our line as Nathan Camp/Kemp and his family had moved to Madison County in the early 1810s and left in the 1820s, but nothing has been uncovered.
