Buried among such notables as Presidents James Monroe and John Tyler, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and numerous Civil War Generals, including George Pickett, are members of our Virginia CAMP Family. Hollywood Cemetery is a very large landscaped and terraced burial ground.
Within a few hundred yards of 'Presidents Circle' is the John W. Camp plot. Among those buried there, pictured above, are JOHN W. CAMP (Sept. 15, 1816 - Aug. 31, 1879), his wife, HARRIET E. CAMP (Dec. 12, 1824 - Mar. 19, 1908), and MARY CAMP EASTWOOD (Nov. 19, 1854 - Dec. 27, 1914).
Other CAMPs buried within the plot are: MARY CAMP TUCKER (Apr. 27, 1884 - Apr. 22, 1971), husband CHARLES WILEY TUCKER, M.D. (Oct. 21, 1876 - Sept. 13, 1937), HUNTER W. CAMP (Oct. 11, 1889 - Feb. 27, 1956), and LUTHER S. CAMP, son of John W. & H.E. Camp (Nov. 17, 1851 - Sept. 19, 1912).
Included also are BERNIE ELLIOT CAMP, wife of Luther S. Camp (Feb. 7, 1857 - Dec. 7, 1899), WILLIAM S. CAMP (Mar. 14, 1886 - Dec. 17, 1940). In nearby Presidents Circle are buried Pres. John Tyler (Mar. 29, 1790 - Jan. 18, 1862) and founding father James Monroe.
The magnificent iron cage contains the sarcophagus and remains of President James Monroe (Apr. 26, 175x - July 4, 183x). He was removed to this location and the monument built by the Virginia General Assembly in the 1850s.

Mattapony Church, King & Queen County, VA

The ancient colonial Mattapony Church, resting place of the family of Carter Braxton, signer of the Declaration of Independence, has a large Kemp plot. Whether they are descended directly from our VA Camps who settled this area in the 1700s has not yet been determined.
Among those Kemps buried in Mattapony, pictured above, are: PETER W. KEMP (Feb. 15, 1840 - Apr. 11, 1921) and wife, Martha ELLEN KEMP (Feb. 15, 1858 - June 3, 1926). Husband and wife, PERRIN W. KEMP (May 28, 1887) and LILLE M. KEMP (May 7, 1891 - Oct. 3, 1923). Husband and wife, DENNIS BIRD KEMP (1885-1960) and LOLA LONGEST KEMP ((1886-1959).
Pictured above are the headstones of husband and wife, ROBERT L. KEMP (Nov. 26, 1895 - July 8, 1976) and MATTIE S. KEMP (May 28, 1896 - Aug. 6, 1939). Mother, ANNIE GRIGGS KEMP (Sept. 5, 1898 - Mar. 31, 1935), JOHN W. KEMP (Apr. 1, 1916 - Dec. 28, 1939), husband and wife, RICHARD KEMP (Sept. 26, 1879 - Dec. 21, 1960) and FLORENCE H. KEMP (Oct. 12, 1884 - Oct. 23, 1930).

Bruington Church, VA
Bruington Church, organized in 1790, home of noted Baptist minister Robert Semple, has a few Civil War era KEMPs resting in its churchyard. Among those are TEMPLE H. KEMP, CO. K., 34 VA. INF., CSA (1833-1900).
Near the back right corner are the husband and wife, JOSEPH HENRY KEMP (June 17, 1856 - Feb. 13, 1933) and EMOGENE STALY KEMP (Feb. 3, 1864 - Dec. 3, 1938). The King and Queen County Archives had very little in the way of Camp/Kemp information. The reason given: half the battles of the Civil War which devasted Virginia's courthouse records.

Culpeper, VA

Culpeper Virgina is the first home of our CAMP ancestors, Thomas CAMP, Sr. and Thomas CAMP, Jr. This beautiful colonial town features the Culpeper Minute Men monument and a local cemetery with another monument honoring Civil War Confederate Dead. Among those listed are some KEMPs.
Plaques on all four sides of the monument list the Kemps by their state, including JOSEPH KEMP of Louisiana, J.H. KEMP of South Carolina, and ASA KEMP of Mississippi. These are most likely cousins from our Nathan Kemp line, but this is not yet confirmed.
