By 1790, the South Carolina county system was well-established and only the extreme western end was designated as 'Indian lands.' The ancestral home of the Thomas Camp III family was in Rutherford County only two miles off the NC/SC border and the Cowpens National Battlefield where several Camps fought in the American Revolution, including Nathan's father Ensign Edward Camp, and some of his brothers and uncles. Notice the SC system involves the use of Districts of Counties, as in Ninety-Six, Camden, Cheraws, Orangeburg, Georgetown, and Charlestown Districts.
