While searching for names in the bound censuses at various state and city archives across the southeastern US, I came across the standard census maps showing how the districts and county lines formed from decade to decade as territories became states and then became counties which further divided until reaching their current recorded boundaries.

Comparing these county census maps by ensuing decades can answer perplexing issues as ancestors records seem to jump from county to county over perhaps 50+ years. Such a study makes it clear that they are not necessarily moving about, but that the county where they reside is subdividing into component counties, followed by the decision about which county will keep which records.
