From THE CAMP CEMETERY By W. D. Floyd

"This cemetery is located just off Hines Road in southern Rutherford Co., NC. To get to it, go south on US221 until you cross the Broad River bridge. Turn east on the first road past the river, Hines Rd. Go about a mile until you cross a creek. The cemetery is down the driveway by the side of the creek and is just before you get to the sand business, on the left. I was there September 17, 1997."

Prominent among the many ancient stones are those of Thomas Camp (8 Feb 1717 - 1798) and 2nd wife Margaret Carney Camp ((20 June 1744 - 1824). The large modern stone (seen here to the right) was probably placed in the 1960's by a recent descedent, Eugene Vernon Camp, who, with financial backing, restored the failing site (see bottom of page for plaque).
On both sides of the modern monolith are the original rough-hewn stones with their stratched-out tributes.

Amazingly, Thomas Camp's inscription is mostly still readable, single-handedly making a pilgrimage to this site well worth it. (I well remember the surprised thrill of finding the stone of my probable tenth-generation ancestor in the Summer of 1991!). It probably originally read,

T. C(AMP)
BORN 1717
DIED
1798
